Clare,
Sheffield Springs Academy invite safeguarded external speakers to present science talks to the top streams of year 7, year 8 and year 9. The presentations are made in the general assembly room to 70 or 80 students at the same time.
I am completing a series of 10 lectures this year and together with the students we have undertaken some three useful non peer reviewed surveys of the students' experiences and wishes. The first was on the content and enjoyment of a walked planetary evolution timeline (with very cheering satisfaction results). The second was asking the age at which students would wish to see their own medical records and at which they would wish their parents not to see their medical records. The third was on where the students would wish to receive their reproductive health education - from parents, school, friends or from the internet.
The lectures utilise pictures, diagrams, cartoons and video clips extensively and the students are beginning to enjoy asking questions which is a good sign, apparently,
I would be happy to share the presentations and I have pasted the list of this year's lectures below. I have accepted an invitation to present the "Neurodiversity" lecture to a group of educationally sensitive students next Autumn. This group contains a number of students who are neurodivergent.
I would like the core content of similar educational material to be available through national health system portals for reference when citizens, adolescents, adults access their medical records, receive medical news, results or diagnoses, or explore or seek new information when they travel through life's many changes and developments.
