March 14th and March 15th Digital health conference in London (2)

17 March, 2023

Neil, sorry, I had promised to try to give a few quotes [*see note below]:

- "Risk" Tim Ferris, the NHS Transformation Lead declared the need to take "risks" with deployment of IT solutions. He attends meetings where very clever people spend hours discussing what not to do because of risk.

- "Auditing innovation" Lead and Marcus Bolton the CEO of one of the main NHS EPRs recommended mire innovations at small scale with a strong audit and assessment of efficacy and with a defined timeline and endpoint elaborated. The results - positive and negative - should be shared widely and "failures" seen as part of the process of innovation research.

- "Leadership by convening" as opposed to top down

- "Collaboration" between all agencies within a project- "not competition".

- " ..only if patients carry their own records.." Health literate patients or their proxies sharing the risks" . A young man from London gave a presentation about a successful London Care Record implementation. A member of the audience enquired how a patient from outside of London could use the record to their advantage.

The young man said that they could not unless they carried or accessed their own "home" record. This, I believe, is one important risk share. Patients deciding who their home record should be shared with and, through sharing their own access portal, - managing the risk themselves excluding health professionals from the risks to their careers of taking data sharing risks.

- "Say as you do, do as you say". This was a statement of Nivmcola Byrne, the National Data Guardian, concerning the public transparency of personal health data processors.

- "residential/nursing hones as part of the hospital" - through digitally joined up working and through virtual wards.

- "people and transformation projects - not just IT projects" came through frequently.

HIFA profile: Richard Fitton is a retired family doctor - GP. [*Note from HIFA moderator (NPW): Thank you Richard, quotes are indeed helpful to give a flavour of any event. I like the humour too: "He attends meetings where very clever people spend hours discussing what not to do because of risk." :-) It sounds like there was a lot of jargon? "Leadership by convening" "Collaboration not competition". "Say as you do, do as you say". "people and transformation projects - not just IT projects"]
