The saddest and most outrageous consequence of health misinformation is the murder of polio vaccine workers. Dozens have been killed in recent years by Islamic fundamentalists in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria due to a range of false beliefs, including that polio vaccine is a western conspiracy to sterilise children or collect intelligence.
