Hi,
After years of opposing, and even prohibiting, polio vaccination in Northern Nigeria states, local traditional and religious leaders have been supporting the Global Polio Eradication Initiative for the last 10 years or so. However, refusal persists in the population and a substantial proportion of the children don’t get vaccinated. This has created a favorable situation for new polio epidemics to appear, such as the current one due to vaccine-derived polioviruses which started in 1916 in Northern Nigeria and Pakistan (for the same reasons as in Nigeria) and has spread to over 20 countries.
I published an article in English (https://doi.org/10.4269/ajtmh.23-0154) and a more complete one in French (https://doi.org/10.48327/mtsi.v3i4.2023.402) on this issue.
