Africa's growing presence in WHO's Executive Board

1 June, 2023

Dear HIFA Colleagues,

The Seventy Sixth World Health Assembly (#WHA76) that ended Yesterday 30th May in Geneva will be remembered. The extraordinary support of Word Health Organization Director General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to African member states is a clear intention to see their health systems thrive albeit global challenges. Cameroon, Comoros, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Rwanda, Senegal, and Togo are the Seven African Countries (Out of 54) which are present on this executive board. This represents the second WHO Region with the greatest number of representatives after WHO Euro. Africa's population is one of the fastest growing population in the world. Therefore a need for public health to be strengthened becomes more than ever necessary.

"The Executive Board is composed of 34 persons who are technically qualified in the field of health, each designated by a Member State that has been elected to serve by the World Health Assembly. Member States are elected for three-year terms." the WHO reports on its page https://apps.who.int/gb/gov/en/composition-of-the-board_en.html.

Cameroon MoH Dr Manaouda Malachie is leading the African member states on the Executive Board. The Presence of Cameroon in the WHO Executive board is the manifestation of tremendous work ongoing in the health ecosystem in the country. Recently Cameroon, launched phase 1 of its Universal Health Coverage (UHC), an ambitious and bold move towards Health for All and health equity. Nonetheless, like many other African countries, there is an urgent need to prioritize mental health especially for the youths, women, and mothers and their babies in the Afro region.
