HIFA News, April 2025 - Invitation to support the HIFA-WHO Collaboration Plan

23 April, 2025

Dear HIFA colleagues,

Thank you so much for your continuing support for HIFA at this very challenging time for global health, as the Trump Administration withdraws from the World Health Organization, appoints someone who cannot tell the difference between misinformation and reliable information to lead the US health services, and dismantles USAID, leaving many of the world's most disadvantaged people without health care and other services.

As Jill Iliffe (Executive Secretary, Commonwealth Nurses and Midwives Federation) says on the HIFA home page this month: "In the current global climate, with increasing volumes of misinformation and disinformation, access to reliable healthcare information is more important than ever"

Despite all this we have good news: the World Health Organization has assessed our performance over the past 3 years and has approved renewal of our official relations status with WHO for the next 3 years. They write: ‘The WHO Executive Board commends the continuing dedication of Global Healthcare Information Network/HIFA in supporting the work of WHO and looks forward to our continuing collaboration towards WHO's mission to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable'.

We have agreed with WHO a 3-year collaboration plan for 2025-2027 and this is now publicly available on the WHO website.

HIFA alone is responsible for raising the funds to implement the 11 activities in the plan. We need to raise a total of £15,000 to support WHO in accelerating progress towards universal access to reliable healthcare information: a world where every person, every health worker and every policymaker will have access to the information they need to protect their own health and the health of others.

I am delighted to report that we already have one-third of the money needed: the Elsevier Foundation has generously provided £5,000.

If you are willing to make a one-off donation or regular monthly payment for our work with WHO, we would be very grateful. Or perhaps you know of a person or organisation that would be interested, in which case please do forward this message to them.

Thank you so much for your support.

Best wishes, Neil
