Hi all,
It's been an informative and exciting week in public health. Thank you again to Dr. Neil and Dr. Meena for the invitation and opportunity to report on HIFA this week. Member states are advocating to prioritize immunization, equitable access to service delivery, quantification of health discrepancies (Republic of Congo), and a continued effort to expand primary healthcare.
I attended the Dr. Lee Jong-Wook memorial prize for Public Health and sat in on the Laureate Lecture presented by award-winning Professor Mohammad Abdul Faiz. He discussed the issues that rise from limited human resources and logistics in Bangladesh at the point of care. In Bangladesh, there is a rampant issue of neurotoxicity due to venomous snake bites. I appreciated the integration of cultural practices with medical education as he utilized "uthan boithok" or courtyard meeting to educate local leaders on proper treatment and preventative measures for snakebites.
There was also an interesting discussion on One Health. The panelists emphasized intersectionality between climate health, animal health, and population health rather than the fragmented approach of disregarding environmental factors. We also see that institutional health is segmented by each government acting in regard to its own interest. To achieve One Health, we must advocate for communication between member states to enable predictive analysis of disease outbreaks.
Best,
Hannah C. Daniel
