WHO: The top 10 causes of death

2 October, 2026

Dear HIFA colleagues,

WHO has just published an update on the top 10 causes of death

https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/the-top-10-causes-of-death

It is frustrating that the website does not allow me to copy and paste the top 10 causes of death for you. So I have to write them manually:

1. Ischaemic heart disease

2. Stroke

3. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

4. Lower respiratory infections

5. Alzheimer disease and other dementias

6. Diabetes

7. Respiratory cancers

8. Hypertensive heart disease

9. Renal disease

10. Diarrhoeal disease

There are in fact several lists of top 10, with a focus on differences bewteen LMICs and HICs.

There is no 'top 10' for other parameters such as age. WHO provides child mortality statistics separately: https://www.who.int/data/gho/data/themes/topics/topic-details/GHO/child-...

As always, the focus is on the medical causes of death. Poor-quality care as a cause of death, based primarily on a failure to translate reliable healthcare information into policy and practice, is not considered.

Best wishes, Neil
