Time to get our act together on UHC and health emergencies

UHC and health emergencies

The COVID-19 crisis is a sharp reminder that everyone, everywhere should have access to quality and affordable health services. Health is a fundamental human right and the foundation of economic prosperity and security.

The crisis demonstrates powerfully the need for health systems that are resilient enough to respond to emergencies, maintain essential health services and manage shocks in ways that protect the most vulnerable.

UHC2030 is strenghtening its multistakeholder perspective on UHC and health emergencies. On 27 May 2020, we will launch a discussion paper in collaboration with partners to consolidate our vision for resilient health systems, and priority actions for both emergency preparedness and UHC goals.

In this newsflash, UHC2030 brings you some key resources and insights from partners in the UHC movement. We hope you find them useful and join us in promoting health systems and UHC as fundamental during this global crisis.

From the Core Team.

These Related Initiatives have come together to share their important insights, guidance and learning during the pandemic response.

This collection includes activities such as data management in emergency settings, useful resources on COVID-19 and health systems, acting now to reset the health governance architecture, health financing during the pandemic, the importance of primary health care at all times and the application of research and evidence.

Civil Society Engagement Mechanism

A test for political leaders to truly leave no one behind

The CSEM and UHC2030 Social Participation Technical Network (SPTN) argue that civil society is not adequately included in national government responses to COVID-19. This is contrary to governments’ commitment in New York last September 2019 in the UN Political Declaration on UHC<https://newsletter.uhc2030.org/t/t-l-nuudklk-uhpwkyy-x/> to ensure that no one is left behind.

Most COVID-19 task forces do not include civil society. In fact, civil society is largely operating independently from the government in most countries, the consequences of which will be seen in the next few weeks and months.

The glaring lack of civil society in government COVID-19 responses means that the world is missing out on the experience and proximity of civil society to the grassroots where COVID-19 is felt the most in its lethality. Read more<https://newsletter.uhc2030.org/t/t-l-nuudklk-uhpwkyy-m/>

The CSEM will soon be announcing a call to action around stronger health systems and preparedness for health emergencies.
