Updated WHO guidance for controlling vector-borne diseases through indoor residual spraying (2)

19 February, 2024

A welcome advice from WHO about IRS especially as it is the main mode of controlling mosquito and other insect attacks in African countries like Nigeria.

However, IRS without outside control and prevention of mosquito breeding is at best futile: the sprays soon evaporate and the inside is re-populated by mosquitoes from outside! At least control of the breeding places for mosquitos and other biting insects outside the house should receive as much attention as IRS. Infact, if the breeding is prevented there will be less or no need for IRS and it’s numerous side effects and cost. It is better and cheaper to prevent the breeding of the insects including mosquitos than depending on the ever costly insecticides!!
