Reflections: IFMBE webinar on cyber security (2)

12 May, 2022

Hi,

Thanks so much for this, very interesting! [ https://www.hifa.org/dgroups-rss/reflections-ifmbe-webinar-cyber-security ]

I note however, that one thing not mentioned directly here, are the explicit business sector interests of the patient, which as we progress towards the 'internet of everything' are critical as well, in the management of health data.

Whilst the point about 'exploitability' acknowledges the as yet unknown threats which exist, simultaneously, the actual process of complaint for active implantable medical device users is lamentable, so extant threats may be being ignored, dismissed or simply missed.

I recently enquired of the Met Police Commissioner's Office, how they would respond to medical device users subject to exploitative or abusive access to their devices/health data - and shockingly, their reply, was that they 'know nothing about these technologies' and therefore would be unable to formally record any such complaint.

In the UK, this week, a case of a medical practioner obtaining exploitative images of female patients has been prosecuted, so be concerned about the criminal 'exploitability' of medical data, including that of recipients of live medical devices, is entirely valid.

At the same time, Equity, the UK actors union (of which I'm a member) is calling for improved safeguarding and accountability of any/all AI usage of members images / data. So in the media industries, where data is itself also capital, cyber security of health records is also demonstrably an economic imperative.

Hope that all makes sense!

Most Sincerely,

Fiona Branson
