New HIFA initiative: HIFA Spotlights (2) A postscript

25 May, 2026

Dear HIFA colleagues,

This is a postscript to my earlier message XXXX

HIFA Spotlights are based on our tried-and-tested model of HIFA Projects.

So what's the difference?

HIFA Projects are in-depth explorations of topics over a period of months or years. Recent examples include Substance use disorders (sponsored by NextGenU.org), Mobile health (sponsored by Research Council of Norway) and Open access (sponsored by Oxford Pharmagenesis. These projects have proved to be highly successful and provide a focus for thematic discussions, each lasting several weeks. Past sponsors have included the Elsevier Foundation, Global Health Academy at the University of Edinburgh, Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs, The Lancet, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, TDR, and the World Health Organization. Read testimonials from our sponsors here: www.hifa.org/projects HIFA Projects are budgeted at £3000 upwards and they have been hugely important for HIFA's financial viability: they have provided two-thirds of our total income. We shall continue to provide all three types of HIFA Project (topic-based, research-based, and WHO-based) for those who require a more in-depth, sustained approach. www.hifa..org/projects However, the current financial situation in global health means that many of our potential sponsors are no longer able to afford a full project.

This is why we have launched HIFA Spotlights, which are similar but much more affordable, at £500 ($680). With a HIFA Spotlight you can put your organisation’s priority topic at the centre of the global health community. For one focused week, we shall mobilise the HIFA forums to generate insights, visibility, and engagement around the issue you care about most.

Our intention is to deliver a win-win for all. A win to our sponsors (who increase their visibility and enhance their mission), a win to HIFA members (who enjoy the challenge of a time-limited focus on a specific topic), and a win to HIFA (every Spotlight and every Project helps HIFA to be more financially sustainable).

With thanks, Neil
