Medical textbooks, AI, SDGs (2) Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

14 April, 2025

Dear Richard,

thank you very much for bringing up this topic – it offers an interesting perspective on aligning individual needs with the Sustainable Development Goals.

In my Master's thesis, I explored the synergies between SDGs 3, 4, and 5, which also led me to examine Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in greater depth.

Based on that, this is one way the connection could be communicated:

*1. Physiological Security*

*(Basic survival needs like food, water, shelter, etc.)*

*Relevant SDGs:*

*SDG 1* – No poverty

*SDG 2* – Zero hunger

*SDG 3* – Good health and well-being

*SDG 6* – Clean water and sanitation

*SDG 7* – Affordable and clean energy

*SDG 11* – Sustainable cities and communities (housing)

*2. Safety*

*(Security of body, employment, resources, health, property, etc.)*

*Relevant SDGs:*

*SDG 3* – Good health and well-being

*SDG 8* – Decent work and economic growth

*SDG 9* – Industry, innovation and infrastructure (reliable systems)

*SDG 11* – Sustainable cities and communities

*SDG 16* – Peace, justice and strong institutions

*3. Love and Belonging*

*(Friendship, family, intimacy, sense of connection)*

*Relevant SDGs:*

*SDG 3* – Good health and well-being (mental/social health)

*SDG 4* – Quality education (social inclusion)

*SDG 5* – Gender equality (inclusive relationships)

*SDG 10* – Reduced inequalities

*SDG 16* – Peace, justice and strong institutions

*SDG 17* – Partnerships for the goals

*4. Esteem*

*(Respect, self-esteem, status, recognition, strength, freedom)*

*Relevant SDGs:*

*SDG 4* – Quality education (empowerment)

*SDG 5* – Gender equality

*SDG 8* – Decent work and economic growth (self-worth through employment)

*SDG 10* – Reduced inequalities

*SDG 16* – Peace, justice and strong institutions (equal rights, legal

identity)

*5. Self-Actualization*

*(Achieving one’s full potential, including creative activities)*

*Relevant SDGs:*

*SDG 4* – Quality education

*SDG 9* – Innovation (creativity and contribution)

*SDG 17* – Partnerships (collaborative growth)

*SDG 12* – Responsible consumption and production (living purposefully)

Kind regards

Anna
