Maurice King is one of my heroes. We used his books on many MSF missions in remote, unstable regions of the world. I will never forget our small team performing a fetal craniotomy by flashlight (in South Sudan, 2002) following the instructions from King’s Primary Surgery book. The woman had been carried in by family members, after journeying on foot for four days to reach us. She was septic but once the baby was removed, she made a remarkable recovery.

King’s books are an impressive achievement and contribution to health workers and people living in the poorest regions of the world. He made surgical and trauma knowledge practical and accessible to practitioners on the frontlines of care and he was an inspiration to our own work at Global Health Media Project – creating teaching videos in and for low-resource settings.

His two volumes on Primary Surgery (trauma and non-trauma) have been updated and can be downloaded free-of-charge from the Global Help website: https://global-help.org/category/surgery/

My sincere condolences to Dr. King's family and to all who knew and loved him.

Kindest regards,

Deb
