It's great that our HIFA partner, Health Policy Watch, highlighted this paper by the WHO Foundation.
I agree that ‘the WHO Foundation’s experience reinforces a simple lesson: philanthropy responds not only to need, but to clarity, trusted partnerships, measurable outcomes, and the confidence that institutions can deliver meaningful impact at scale’. We all need to be aware that WHO consists of 194 member states; they come together during WHA and EB and other meetings to discuss and agree on the WHO Workplan and decide the WHO priority activities/ programs.
However, when the WHO budget is decreased these activities get affected, and then people criticise the WHO.

HIFA profile: Dr Meena Nathan Cherian was a professor of anaesthesiology from Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore, India. She trained, worked, and taught in several countries, USA (Johns Hopkins Hospital), Southeast Asia and Africa. She worked at the World Health Organization Headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland, as the Emergency and Essential Surgical Care Program Lead where she created the ‘surgical care’ program resulting in the first World Health Assembly Resolution on ‘Emergency and Essential Surgical Care and Anaesthesia in the context of Universal Health Coverage’.
