The complete online version of Epilepsy and Seizures: Building Care in the Community is now freely available on Hesperian’s website! As Dr. Jo Wilmshurst, a leader of the South African chapter of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) remarked during a launch introducing the book to African clinicians, this resource provides “a strong push for the voice and lived experience of people with epilepsy to be heard and understood.”
As HIFA members know, most medical and nursing students get quite limited education on epilepsy, often resulting in poor care, misdiagnoses, and stigma against people with this condition. Hesperian hopes this book will help change that, and we urge you to let others know that this community-centered guide can familiarize them with seizure types, causes, effects, medicines, and care. Use this resource to cut through widespread misinformation about epilepsy and provide compassionate care.
Hesperian’s open copyright policy encourages you to consider translating sections or the entire book into local languages to help spread this essential information even further. Please email epilepsy@hesperian.org to find out if anyone else has begun translating in your language, to get support that will make the work easier, and so we can post what you translate so it can help others.
As Eddie Chengo, the book’s medical reviewer, put it: “This is not just an epilepsy book; it is a health book that explains epilepsy in a way that matters to everyone.” And now it’s available for free!
