This short course offers an opportunity for participants to work through the thorny questions and challenges that arise when undertaking Community Engagement and Involvement (CEI) in practice.

Building on a prior UK National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) commissioned learning programme on CEI and many years of experience working within research collaborations around the world, our in-person course seeks to enable peer-to-peer learning on issues such as navigating the dilemmas of ethical engagement in real time, making change visible through adaptive learning processes, and a deep dive into the challenges of integrating CEI within applied health research. As global health research funders increasingly demand projects and proposals that incorporate public and/or community engagement elements, this course is designed to give space to ask hard questions and reckon with the intended (and unintended) consequences of shifting power in research processes.

The course will run from 9 September until 13 September and the deadline for application is 12 August 2024.

HIFA profile: Tom Barker is Senior Health Convenor in the Health and Nutrition Cluster of the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), UK Tom has 15 years’ experience working in knowledge brokering, research communication, policy engagement, and parliamentary influencing in the UK health and international development policy arenas. Tom manages a portfolio of health and nutrition projects working in Sub- Saharan Africa and Asia, including Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, China, India and Bangladesh, including Future Health Systems, and is currently Communications Manager for Health Systems Global. Previously Tom managed a research knowledge brokering network for the UK National Institute for Health Research Health Services and Delivery Research Programme; facilitated engagements with the UK Parliament for the NHS Confederation, a membership body for NHS organisations; and ran the UK All Party Parliamentary Group on Primary Care and Public Health.
