Dear Dr Nirwan,

Thank you for referring us to your books on making anesthesia understandable and less intimidating for patients.

I would like to use this as a way to open up a discussion here on HIFA about the information that patients need before undergoing surgery.

I invite others to comment on any aspect. For example: informed consent; providing adequate information about the procedure; and providing adequate information about anaesthesia - in a way that provides the patient with an understanding of what is going to happen to them and any potential risks.

Would HIFA members like to comment on any of this? Do you have any suggestions on guidance for patients?

Best wishes, Neil
