Disaster Research Response (DR2) Program

The DR2 Program provides training, funding, and a Resources Portal [ https://tools.niehs.nih.gov/dr2/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] of tools to empower human health research in response to disasters and public health emergencies.

Earthquake Resources and Tools

The NIH DR2 Program and NIEHS have resources for research pertaining to earthquakes. When it comes to earthquakes, these disasters can occur indiscriminately and don't afford disaster researchers much time to prepare. Our DR2 community of practice has spent time developing these tools and resources to aid in this process, and we hope they can benefit your research teams. Our thoughts continue to be with those recently impacted by earthquake events around the world and welcome any and all feedback or additional tools and resources you may have to share.

The NIH DR2 Program has curated a repository of data collection tools and related resources to empower human health research in response to disasters and public health emergencies. Below are a list of some examples in the repository that can assist with research priorities pertaining to earthquakes:

* ShakeAlert Resources include the ShakeAlert Baseline Survey [ https://tools.niehs.nih.gov/dr2/index.cfm/resource/24299?utm_medium=emai... ], which is a survey instrument developed to evaluate readiness for and attitudes toward earthquakes and earthquake early warning on the US West Coast, and the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning and Schools in the United States [ https://tools.niehs.nih.gov/dr2/index.cfm/resource/24300?utm_medium=emai... ], which is an online survey used to gather perceptions and/or adoption of earthquake early warning systems in schools.

* 2011 New Zealand and Japan Earthquake Household Response Survey [ https://tools.niehs.nih.gov/dr2/index.cfm/resource/24301?utm_medium=emai... ] - Measures in this response survey include environmental and social context, building structure, earthquake, and tsunami risk perception, behavioral response (during and after), emotional response, risk information channel, previous earthquake experience, earthquake damage, and demographic data. There are 32 questions in the questionnaire.

* Post-Sylmar Earthquake Study [ https://tools.niehs.nih.gov/dr2/index.cfm/resource/7831?utm_medium=email... ] (Interview A) - This questionnaire was developed by the Survey Research Center at the Institute for Social Science Research, University of California, Los Angeles. These are questions for the San Fernando Valley Child Guidance Clinic concerning events, behaviors, and attitudes of children impacted by the earthquake; these questions are administered to the parents or caregiver. Other resources include the Post-Sylmar Earthquake Study (Interview B) [ https://tools.niehs.nih.gov/dr2/index.cfm/resource/7832?utm_medium=email... ] which is administered directly to the child, and the Post-Sylmar Earthquake Study (Wave II Reinterview) [ https://tools.niehs.nih.gov/dr2/index.cfm/resource/7830?utm_medium=email... ], which is part of a second wave of interviews regarding earthquake predictions and preparedness.

* Knowledge, Attitudes and Preparedness for Earthquakes [ https://tools.niehs.nih.gov/dr2/index.cfm/resource/7838?utm_medium=email... ] - This resource is a measure of Southern California residents' knowledge, attitudes, and preparedness for an earthquake. This resource was identified by the NIH Disaster Research Response Program (DR2) for researchers looking for pre- and post-disaster data collection instruments.

* Historic Earthquake Research Materials [ https://tools.niehs.nih.gov/dr2/index.cfm/resource/7829?utm_medium=email... ] - Earthquake related behavior is an important part of disaster research in California. Behavior during and immediately after earthquakes is influenced by a range of socioeconomic, situational, and social psychological factors. This tool includes survey data, protocols collected as part of research at the University of California, Los Angeles about the knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of individuals in responding to earthquakes. Examples of information included in this resource is data from previous earthquakes ranging from 1979 – 1990.

* Whittier Narrows Earthquake Study [ https://tools.niehs.nih.gov/dr2/index.cfm/resource/7836?utm_medium=email... ] - This is a survey from the Survey Research Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, used to conduct a study about people's recent experiences with earthquakes. The questions are about both the 1987 Whittier earthquake and people's experiences in other earthquakes.

* Bay Area Earthquake: Telephone Screener [ https://tools.niehs.nih.gov/dr2/index.cfm/resource/7837?utm_medium=email... ] - This telephone questionnaire is from the Survey Research Center at University of California at Berkeley and was used to conduct a study about people's experiences with earthquakes in the Bay Area and other earthquakes.

* Community Response to the January 17, 1994, Northridge Earthquake Questionnaire [ https://tools.niehs.nih.gov/dr2/index.cfm/resource/7834?utm_medium=email... ] - This telephone survey questionnaire was developed utilizing Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI). The survey was to identify and assess Southern California residents' experiences in and responses to the Northridge earthquake of January 17, 1994. The survey document contains machine-coding and survey questions.

* Earthquake and Tsunami Questionnaires in Banda Acedh and Surrounding Areas [ https://tools.niehs.nih.gov/dr2/index.cfm/resource/7851?utm_medium=email... ] - As part of a journal article, this questionnaire is designed for individuals impacted by earthquakes and tsunamis, and authored by a team led by Hirokazu Iemura at Kyoto University. Japanese researchers in Banda Aceh and surrounding areas in Indonesia after the great Sumatra earthquake distributed the questionnaire to people affected by the earthquake and tsunami. The purpose of the questionnaire was to collect information about what happened and what was expected by the affected people to be safe against future earthquakes and tsunamis.
