Critical illness in African hospitals

6 March, 2025

Hi,

Last week, the African Critical Illness Outcomes Study (ACIOS) was published in The Lancet (declaration: I was one of the authors).

The international, prospective study included 20,000 patients in 180 hospitals in 22 countries.

It is the first comprehensive, Africa-wide study into the prevalence and mortality of critical illness and the coverage of Essential Emergency and Critical Care (EECC).

Key findings:

• 1 in 8 (12.5%) hospital inpatients are critically ill

• 69% of the critically ill are treated in general wards (not in HDUs or ICUs)

• 56% are not receiving EECC

• 21% die within 7 days (compared to just 2.7% of non critically ill patients)

The study clearly shows the large existing burden of critical illness and the need for EECC as a solution for saving many lives.

Thanks,

Yours,

Tim
