Collaboration between traditional and Western practitioners for mental health in Malawi (2)

18 December, 2022

I remember, well, a presentation at the International Conference of Urban Health in Nairobi in 2009. The presenters were a team of psychiatric researchers who had been assisting a Kenyan mental health service to try to utilise and integrate an American classification of mental health diseases into the Kenyan mental health team work practices. The exercise was unsuccessful and mayhave failed as the patient centric USA system did not match the community centric Kenyan system of mental health management - ie a community based model for psychiatric care - the patient as part of a community rather than just an individual.
