Children and COVID-19

21 May, 2021

Dear CHIFA members

What is the problem in rich countries?

The facts in Japan

1. The coverage of vaccines introduced in the National Immunisation Programme decreased in Spring 2020. However, it recovered in Autumn 2020.

2. The number of infectious diseases from fixed points decreased in 2020 and 2021. Influenza disappeared March in 2020. And there was no epidemic stage in the last winter. We observed similar patterns in GABHAS pharyngitis (tonsilitis), adenovirus infections (EKC, PCF), enterovirus infections (Herpangina, HFMD), and mycoplasma pneumonitis. The cases of bacterial meningitis and exanthema subitum were the same as usual years.

3. The number of suicide cases in teenagers in 2020 was 777. The average number between 2014 and 2019 was 579. So, the number of suicide cases in this age increased by 34 per cent.

Could you give the information from your country?

Kind regards,

Hajime
