Behind every gold ribbon this September is a family who knows exactly what it means to face childhood cancer.
For three families in South Africa, Minnesota, and Mexico, it started the same way: a glow in their daughter's eye that didn't look quite right.
Bo, Cape Town, South Africa — Jess had seen the same cloudy glow in the family dog's eye years earlier. When she saw it in her daughter Bo's, she didn't second-guess herself. Bo was diagnosed with retinoblastoma and lost an eye, but not her spirit. Today, she's a thriving toddler who loves to sing and dance.
Harmonee, Minnesota, USA — Randi noticed a tiny white spot in her daughter's eye that was easy to explain away, until it wasn't. She trusted her gut, and days later had an answer: retinoblastoma. Harmonee lost her eye to the disease, but not her spark. Today, she's back to being her bubbly, happy self.
Andrea, Mexico — Alma was two months into motherhood when she saw The Glow in her daughter's eye, and she didn't stop asking questions until someone listened. Andrea was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, and doctors removed one eye to save her life. Today, she sings lead in a mariachi band and calls her prosthetic eye her warrior's scar.
