Author processing charges

Dear HIFA colleagues,

HIFA recently hosted a discussion on Open Access sponsored by Oxxford Pharmagenesis where APC capping (whereby funders will only pay for APC up to a certain amount) was one of the main recommendations. Here is a blog we published at the time: https://www.hifa.org/news/what-we-learned-about-open-access-publishing-h...

I was intereseted to see this blog on Scholarly Kitchen:

https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2026/05/14/apc-caps-and-bans-why-fun...

Interesting blog but I'm not clear what is the #1 reason why APC capping would not work. What *are* the options for reducing the phenomenal APCs that some publishers charge?

Best wishes, Neil
