It is really sad news to be lost by the people you aim to protect. Unfortunately, similar attacks have occurred in other countries, including Nigeria in 2013 (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/feb/08/polio-workers-nigeria-shot...) and Afghanistan in 2022 (https://news.un.org/en/story/2022/02/1112612). What stands out is that the intensity of targeting vaccination efforts increased noticeably after the CIA's use of a fake vaccination programme in 2011 to collect DNA from Osama bin Laden's family (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2011/jul/11/cia-fake-vaccinations-osam...). It remains a striking choice that, among available intelligence options, this method relied on undermining a fundamental public health tool relied upon by millions of children worldwide. The consequences for global polio eradication efforts have continued more than a decade later, long after the original operation concluded and 'mission accomplished'
