Dear friends at HIFA,
I’m happy to announce to HIFA readers that Hesperian, publishers of Where There Is No Doctor, has just published Epilepsy and Seizures: Building Care in the Community by Aditi Malhota and Todd Jailer. This new resource provides the approximately 70 million people in the world with epilepsy (and their caregivers) with demystified information about the complex physical and social aspects of epilepsy and seizures, covering identification of seizure types, seizure 1st aid, a guide to antiseizure medicines, effects of epilepsy on childhood, adolescence, and pregnancy, how to improve the responsiveness of the medical system, and other topics. Because many people with epilepsy find the stigma and discrimination against them more problematic than the condition itself, the book also focuses on challenging stigma in families, communities and institutions. As most health workers receive little to no education on epilepsy, this book is sorely needed.
An online book launch is scheduled for Tuesday 14 April to which you are cordially invited. Several of the dozens of epilepsy activists and health workers from around the world who participated in the book’s development will be speaking. Register on Hesperian’s website: www.hesperian.org
As with all Hesperian publications, the book – just back from the printer – will shortly be available for free download on Hesperian’s website. Please inform people in your community affected by epilepsy about this new, accessible, unique resource.
