Africa Evidence Network: Evidence Doesn't Need Defending — It Needs Liberating (4) Access to patient records, second opinions and Martha's rule

28 March, 2026

Finding a balance between certainty and doubt was a fine and often incorrectly crossed line in my General Practice experience and is now recignuzed in national the English NHS Martha's rule [*see note below] which has already been implemented 10,000 times with 3000 improvements in diagnosis or management.

I believed that patients could have a better chance from my care if they could have a second bite at their diagnosis cherry by re-using and sharing the data and diagnoses in my records.

Charlotte Blease's research (*) has supported the logic of doubt, uncertainty, and second opinions.
