Introducing the First African mental health data repository

25 March, 2026

*Dear HIFA colleagues*,

It is exciting to announce the launch of the Mental Health Metadata Repository by the Mental Health Data Prize Africa Team, in partnership with *African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC)* and *Wellcome Trust*.

This is the first time Africa has a centralized platform that consolidates datasets on common mental illnesses like (depression, anxiety) and psychosis to support research, innovation, and evidence-based policy across the continent. Some of the advantages of the repository is that :

- It is tailored to African contexts.

- It is designed to enable data-driven insights.

- The platform datasets span multiple designs across a broad scope.

- The platform is open, enabling collaboration to maximize impact.

In a context of poor evidence ecosystem in mental health the repository marks a significant step in strengthening mental health research and enabling better decision-making by clearly outlining how its linked data can be accessed.
