Webinar Recording Now Available: Evolving Definitions of Global Health Webinar

27 February, 2026

Child Family Health International (CFHI) recently held a webinar entitled “Evolving Definitions of Global Health,” featuring a panel discussion on how emerging scholarship is reshaping the conceptual foundations of global health education, policy, and practice.

Moderated by Dr. Jessica Evert, CFHI’s Global Medical Director, the conversation explored a newly proposed definition presented in the article "An updated definition of global health" published in Global Health Research & Policy. Two of the article's co-authors, Dr. Katherine Jacobson (University of Richmond) and Dr. Carol Waggett (Allegheny College), discussed how the proposed updated definition builds on a 2009 definition by incorporating policy, emphasizing protection through health security and human rights, and centering planetary health in recognition of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation. The panel also featured Dr. Oladele A. Ogunseitan (University of California, Irvine), Dr. John Olawapo (Northeastern University), and Dr. Abram L. Wagner (University of Michigan), who offered valuable insights and reflections on this topic, drawing on their expertise, research, and practice in global and public health.

From integrating planetary health into the CUGH competency toolkit to encouraging classroom engagement with policy tensions and the social determinants of health, speakers emphasized the need to prepare learners to navigate the complex intersections of science, equity, politics, and environmental change.
