In addition to your observation Joseph, what I found interesting in this conversation so far is the remark that traditional medicine is associated with natural remedies. Over the past few years, I have noted an increase in the consumption of wild fruits by urban consumers in Zimbabwe ahead of exotic fruits like oranges and mangoes. This trend could be related to the view that wild fruits are more natural, purer and free from chemicals or additives - therefore more healthy.
As you say, we need lots of research to prove most of these notions and beliefs.
