World Meningitis Day 2021: Access to free resources in 10 languages

1 April, 2021

Every year, on 24th of April, the Confederation of Meningitis Organisations (CoMO) joins people and organisations worldwide to raise awareness of meningitis, a disease that is largely preventable and yet contains to claim hundreds and thousands of lives each year.

This year will see our largest push ever as we’ll encourage everyone to “Take Action #DefeatMeningitis”. This comes after the WHO approved their Global Roadmap to Defeat Meningitis by 2030 [] in the last World Health Assembly, a landmark achievement that recognises the struggles of millions of people affected by meningitis. But, despite this landmark achievement, serious challenges remain.

Progress against meningitis lags behind other vaccine preventable diseases and yet meningitis can claim a life in under 24 hours. Levels of awareness around this disease are low which is dangerous because its signs and symptoms can be easily confused with other diseases e.g. the flu, malaria, or Covid-19. The social distancing measures adopted to limit the transmission of Covid-19 has seen a fall in the number of meningitis cases as well but these measures were always going to be temporary. As we see more and more countries starting to relax their restrictions, we expect to see a rise in the number of meningitis cases, especially given disruptions in immunisation service delivery.

CoMO is calling on everyone to support the World Meningitis Day campaign, which aims to reach people with personal stories and information about meningitis. Support the campaign and prevent the preventable:

- Download and share the campaign’s free resources on social media, including personal stories and infographics in: English, French, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Spanish, Akan (Twi), Turkish, Japanese and Indonesian. Check out our Toolkit webpage.
