Neil, hit the nail on the head. When we launched the 12-Pillar Clinical Governance in 2004 we had to come up with a catch definition that policy makers / politicians could understand that as good and necessary as it is to provide infrastructure, equipment, utility and other tools for work to provide patient centered care, it was imperative that the care providers are catered for so that they are healthy and ready to deliver that care: we defined the 12-Pillar Clinical Governance as 'protecting patients, supporting practitioners, in tandem'. Both must go together if any success is to be achieved to strengthen the health system that can provide quality and safe care.
