2019 Budget includes Sin Tax on Sugar-Sweetened Beverages to help combat Non communicable diseases

30 September, 2018

Dear All,

2019 will mark the year Zambia will implement a 30 ngwee excise duty on each litre of Sugar-Sweetened beverage (SSB) according to the 2019 Budget that was presented last Friday.

Zambia will join South Africa as the two African countries that will implement a SSB tax to help combat an increasing burden of Non communicable diseases. However the revenue will be pooled centrally and hasn't been earmarked for the health sector. Nonetheless it's a progressive policy move and good start.

Kind Regards
